MAE 337 – Thermal Engineering Lab

Experiment 1: Continuous Flow Gas Calorimeter

Objective:

To determine the heat of combustion of natural gas by the continuous flow calorimeter method and to become familiar with the calculations and corrections used in precision calorific work.

Experiment 2: Bomb Calorimeter

Objective:

To determine the higher heating value (total calorific value, or gross heat of combustion) of a sample of liquid diesel fuel.

Experiment 3: The Analysis of a Spark Ignition and Compression Ignition Engine

Objective:

To determine the P-v and T-s diagrams of a SI (Spark Ignition) and a CI (Compression Ignition or  Diesel) engine, idealized to the air standard Otto cycle, and the operating characteristics of each engine.

Experiment 4: The Analysis of a Gas Turbine Engine

Objective:

To determine the characteristics of a simple gas turbine jet engine. The thermodynamic properties at each point of the Brayton cycle are calculated to permit complete analysis of the cycle.

Experiment 5: Simple Steam Power Plant

Objective:

To determine the characteristics of a steam power plant and gain an understanding of the Rankine Cycler System as a whole and details of each component making up the system.

Experiment 6: Refrigeration Cycle, the Analysis of Simple Air-Conditioning Unit

Objective:

To investigate different air-conditioning processes including heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification and to use the Psychrometric chart as applied to humidity measurement and control.
